What's new
Dashboards now have a filter
 in the toolbar, next to the time frame selector. Pick an attribute once and every widget on the board follows, instead of opening each widget and editing its filters one at a time.
What you can do
Click Filter
 on any dashboard, choose an attribute such as Department, Class or Channel, and pick the values you want. Use has any of
 to keep them or has none of
 to exclude them.
Filter on several attributes at once.
Share the narrowed board by copying the URL. The filter travels with the link.
See exactly what each widget did with the filter. A widget that applied it shows a filter icon whose tooltip reads the filter back, for example Department: (has any of) Clothing
.
Spot the widgets that could not apply it. Those show a crossed-out filter icon naming the attribute, so a widget showing wider numbers than the rest of the board is never a mystery.
Your saved widgets are untouched. The filter is laid over them when the dashboard is displayed, and clearing it returns every widget to how it was saved. Where a widget already filters the same attribute, the dashboard filter replaces it; filters on other attributes are kept.
Why it helps
Switching a dashboard between departments or channels used to mean editing every widget on it, which is slow and easy to get half-right on a board with a dozen widgets. Now it is one action, and the board tells you which widgets it applies to.
The filter names an attribute
 rather than a column, so it works across a dashboard whose widgets come from different modules.
Number and chart widgets are supported today. Grid widgets show the crossed-out icon and are not narrowed yet.
